Important Notes:

  • Pre-work is required. Be prepared to discuss your completed work during the class.

  • If pre-work is not completed and discussed, you will not receive your Blue Card, as the requirements will not be met.

Thank you for signing up for the Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge. This email will guide you through the completion of this merit badge. There are some prerequisites that you need to finish before coming to the online session.

 

Zoom Link: Scouts will attend the online zoom session using a zoom link sent to the email address you used to register. If you don't see that email check your spam and junk folder.

Step 3: Some Merit Badge Requirements must be completed beforehand. Please read below for the prerequisites, and please respond back to this form ASAP for your charity approval: https://form.jotform.com/250166581241149

 

Merit Badge Prerequisites: 

Requirement #1: PREREQUISITE

Discuss with your counselor what citizenship in the community means and what it takes to be a good citizen in your community. Discuss the rights, duties, and obligations of citizenship, and explain how you can demonstrate good citizenship in your community, Scouting unit, place of worship, or school.

Preparation:
This requirement will be completed during the session. Please be prepared to share your thoughts on the following questions:

  • What does citizenship mean to you?

  • What does it take to be a good citizen in your community?

  • What are some examples of rights, duties, and obligations as a citizen?

  • How can you demonstrate good citizenship in your school, Scouting unit, or community?

Reminder:
We expect responses from each of you during the discussion, so take some time to think about these questions in advance. Brief answers are fine but should reflect your understanding and perspective.

 

Requirement #5: PREREQUISITE

With the approval of your counselor and a parent, watch a movie that shows how the actions of one individual or group of individuals can have a positive effect on a community. Discuss with your counselor what you learned from the movie about what it means to be a valuable and concerned member of the community.

Preapproved Counselor List (must also get parent's approval)

  • It's a Wonderful Life (G)

  • Robin Hood (PG-13)

  • Remember the Titans (G)

Preparation:
This requirement will be completed during the session. Watch one of these three movies and be prepared to share your thoughts on the following questions:

  • What did you learn from the movie about what it means to be a valuable and concerned member of the community?

  • How would you apply what you learned from the movie in your daily life?

  • What lessons from their community could you bring to yours?

Reminder:
We expect responses from each of you during the discussion, so take some time to think about these questions in advance. Brief answers are fine but should reflect your understanding and perspective.

 

Requirement #6: List some of the services (such as the library, recreation center, public transportation, and public safety) your community provides that are funded by taxpayers. Tell your counselor why these services are important to your community.

Submit by: Prepare a list of the services and be prepared to talk about them during the class and post them in the online classroom.

 

Requirement #7: PREREQUISITE

Do the following:
a) Identify three charitable organizations outside of Scouting that interests you and bring people in your community together to work for the good of your community.
b) Pick ONE of the organizations you chose for requirement 7a. Using a variety of resources (including newspapers, fliers and other literature, the Internet, volunteers, and employees of the organization), find out more about this organization.
c) With your counselor's and your parent's approval, contact the organization you chose for requirement 7b and find out what young people can do to help. While working on this merit badge, volunteer at least eight hours of your time for the organization. After your volunteer experience is over, discuss what you have learned with your counselor.

This requirement will be discussed during the session. You need to complete your eight hours of volunteer service before the online session! Be prepared to share your thoughts on the following questions:

  • What did you learn from your experience?

  • What skills or lessons did you learn during your volunteer experience that you can use?

  • What challenges did you face while volunteering, and how did you overcome them?

We expect responses from each of you during the discussion, so take some time to think about these questions in advance. Brief answers are fine but should reflect your understanding and perspective.

 

Requirement #8: Develop a public presentation (such as a video, slide show, speech, digital presentation, or photo exhibit) about important and unique aspects of your community. Include information about the history, cultures, and ethnic groups of your community; its best features and popular places where people gather; and the challenges it faces. Stage your presentation in front of your merit badge counselor or a group, such as your patrol or a class at school.

Submit by: Record a video of you doing this presentation with the required information above. Please submit a video and copy of a speech or a digital presentation such as a PowerPoint. to the online classroom. The video must be over 3 min. This can be completed before the session.

 

How to submit completed work:

  • Use the Online Classroom: https://form.jotform.com/223446537565160 

  • The online classroom does not auto-save work.

  • You need to hit the save button to save a draft.

  • Saved Drafts are auto-deleted after 2 months so save your work in your own WORD doc or Google Doc and copy and paste into the online classroom.

  • Scouts have three months to complete this.


Blue Cards:

  • Upon submitting work in the online classroom and approval from our merit badge counselor, Scouts will be issued a digital blue card signed by our merit badge counselor. This can be done with a digital PDF or signed on Scoutbook.com

 

Camera Requirement

  • All participants MUST have their cameras on during online sessions.

  • If you are unable to turn your camera on, you will not be allowed to stay in the session and will need to rebook at your parent/guardian's expense.

Increased Prerequisites

  • Additional prerequisites will be introduced to enhance discussions during class requirements. Participants should come prepared to actively share their answers during the session.
